December 20th at Dolly's Bookstore in Park City

Make a spot on your calendar for ny second book signing. I will be at Dolly's Bookstore in Park City on Sunday December 20th from 4 - 7 PM. They tell me that a lot of local artists and musicians will be up there and it will include food and wine. Hell...that is reason enough to come. More details to follow as the event approaches.

Buy my book....damnit!

It seems silly to start a blog on skiing and not promote what happens to be the best damned guide to skiing Utah in the world. Actually, that is sort of easy to say since it is the ONLY resort guide written.

Actually, this is a great book for visitors and locals alike. It has lots of great pics and really goes into each resort in-depth. I skied all 13 Utah resorts and found each has something great to offer. Order it now from your local bookseller or Amazon!

Snowbasin Makes Magic

People are freaking out that we have not had a lot of snow. The fact is, I cannot remember skiing on Turkey Day that often and I really don't recall many years where skiing was all that good before mid-December. The good news is that even if Mother Nature has decided to keep the white stuff in her pocket, human ingenuity persists.

The Snowbasin blog has been showing off their 600 acres of snowmaking equipment. The weather has been pretty cool and they have been trying to pump as much snow onto the mountain as possible. They want to open this weekend but are facing the challenges of inversion and time. Here's hoping they can continue to work their magic and get the lift operating soon.

Now..repeat after me...."Dear (insert religious deity here), please bring us loads and loads of snow!"

The essence of snow!

When Autumn arrives, you can feel something special. It is not the beautiful changing of the colors. It is not the warm days and cool evenings. It isn't the sudden change in local markets from summer sales to Halloween decorations. It is the smell of snow. Yes, there is this distinct odor in Utah that any skier and snowboard can detect in the air.

The moment the odor arrives, we stop; turn our heads upward; and inhale deeply. In a moment, our whole disposition changes and suddenly elation bubbles from within. Like a perfumed woman walking into a Parisian bar, the arrival of the winter season turns our heads and changes our thoughts. Our minds are immediately transported to the slopes and things begin to take a focus on the coming season.

I love this magical aroma. It is intoxicating and invigorating.
