Playin hooky!

So, the last three days have seen a constant snowfall and I could not resist. I dropped the kids off at school and headed up to the Basin. I got in three full runs of "first track" powder (as seen above) and beat the crap out of my body by doing seven top to bottom runs in under 2.5 hours. By the end, the stuff was getting seriously cut up and a bit hard to manage.

The thighs are burned out but my word, what a morning. It was spectactular. All I have to say is that it is good thing it doesn't snow like this every week or my productivity at work would go to hell and a hand basket.

This powder shot was taken from the top of Philpot Ridge looking down toward Dan's.

The Beauty of Inversion

Utah has this odd phenomenon called an "inversion" in which the valleys get dust and pollution trapped. The air becomes simply awful, hazy and basically makes our quality of life pretty crappy. However, the flipside of this is that the mountains get amazing sunshine and perfect clean air. So while those below suffer with edible air, us mountain goats find blissful and beautiful conditions up above.

The fun thing is that the only thing that clears out the inversion is a nice strong low pressure storm. So, an inversion is a win win for riders because when it is in place, we have great clear skiing. When it gets blown out, we are getting pounded by snow! Either way, we get what we want.

The pic is from the top of Snowbasin last Monday. Normally, Ogden is easily visible but today it looks like a sea of cloud. Yes, an inversion can be a thing of beauty.

Midnight Run

The light is really flat but the snow...oh the snow. This storm continues to build on the base. There's also a fierce wind up here today but again....it's all about the snow!

First year with a helmet!

This year I took the helmet plunge. Years of skiing can free made this change a bit weird but I have to say I love it. I bought a Giro G10 and it is great. The vent on top allows me to adjust the temperature and the helmet is super light. And yes this is third day up....woohooo.

Snowbasin Makes Magic

People are freaking out that we have not had a lot of snow. The fact is, I cannot remember skiing on Turkey Day that often and I really don't recall many years where skiing was all that good before mid-December. The good news is that even if Mother Nature has decided to keep the white stuff in her pocket, human ingenuity persists.

The Snowbasin blog has been showing off their 600 acres of snowmaking equipment. The weather has been pretty cool and they have been trying to pump as much snow onto the mountain as possible. They want to open this weekend but are facing the challenges of inversion and time. Here's hoping they can continue to work their magic and get the lift operating soon.

Now..repeat after me...."Dear (insert religious deity here), please bring us loads and loads of snow!"
