Ski and Snowboarding Helmet Usage is Picking Up

As a first year helmet wearer, I am actually not surprised by this article. Seriously, I love my helmet. It keeps my head warm and is no less comfortable than a hat. Moreover, I have good protection for a potential accident or collision.

The article notes "It's really the middle demographic, the 30-somethings to 50-somethings, that have been slow” to embrace helmets" I fit exactly in this spot and really was hesitant to move to a helmet. Now, I would not go back to a hat.

While I support the freedom for people to choose whether or not they wear a helmet, I think it is clearly the better choice. If you are one of those old school people who think a helmet is going to be a problem, trust me. The helmet is the better choice on many many levels.

It’s a Snowboard. It’s Skis. Yes, It’s Both.

Here is a clever idea. Snowboarders have a distinct disadvantage to skiers in the back country. Their bindings and gear force them to either hike or drag a foot. This new design seems to answer the call. I wonder how they perform and how the bindings work?

All I want for Christmas...well actually, the whole "Peace on Earth" does take first but this wicked little camera is a close second. Taking HD video, it is the perfect way to capture those sweet rides for posterity. What a great way to share your experience on the slopes without much effort. Check out the review on TechCrunch.

Zeal Optics - Eclipse - One goggle to rule them all!

So, this is an idea that has been a long time coming. I picked up a pair of these Zeal SPPX google and they are amazing. The goggle is photochromatic which means it gets light when its dark and dark when its light. Moreover, the lens is polarized and very wide. The beauty of this design is that the constantly shifting conditions on the mountain are now addressed. You no longer need to haul three pairs of goggle to be prepared!

First year with a helmet!

2009-11-28_10

This year I took the helmet plunge. Years of skiing can free made this change a bit weird but I have to say I love it. I bought a Giro G10 and it is great. The vent on top allows me to adjust the temperature and the helmet is super light. And yes this is third day up....woohooo.

Custom Feet

091125-150806

Do you have weird feet? Do you struggle with finding comfortable boots? With custom foot beds, you eliminate all those problems. I must have been born to ski as my size 11A flat feet have closer resemblance to boards save the toes attached at the end. Finding shoes is a nightmare and ski boots used to be worse. However, about ten years ago I bought custom foot beds and all is well. Today's boot has a ton of options for customization including formed outer shell and linings. However, the custom foot bed is really the best!

The process involves baking the pad and the placing it on your foot. They then suck the air out a bag while the pad is attached to your foot. This makes it form directly to your feet. Voila, you now have an insole that matches your foot exactly. This technology is really worth the extra money as it makes boots much more comfortable, gives your boots more life and really increases performance on the slopes.

Those of you with normal feet can just be quiet.

Scottevest - The Batman utility belt for the active person.

Scottevest makes some pretty cool gear. I own a fleece hoodie and I love how I can incorporate my headphones for my iPod right into the jacket. For the gadget lover, their clothes are a dream. You always have enough pockets and they are really durable. I am actually planning on getting the microfleece top to wear under my shell so I can keep my phone and iPod protected but accessible while I am on the mountain.
